XWiki is an open source, freely distributed, cross-platform and commercial web-based software that provides a platform for developing collaborative applications using the Wiki paradigm and other projects that were developed with its help. It can be used for intranets, project collaboration, public websites, portals or knowledge management.

Key features include over 700 extensions, such as skins, pluging, add-ons and macros, the ability to edit web pages, simple wiki syntax to format text, link creation, table creation, as well as support for displaying images.

Users will be able to use a powerful WYSIWYG editor to edit content, and any change will be automatically saved under a version control, meaning that you will be able to view any previous version of a web page, as well as to rollback or compare different versions.

Web developers can use XWiki's programming API (Application Programming Interface) directly into web pages, to perform advanced formatting, layout, and other similar tasks.

XWiki can be easily converted into a blogging application, a RSS feed aggregator, a poll or survey software, a forum board, as well as form-based apps that can be used to enter collections of items.

The software can be used as a collaborative tool for authoring documents in real time, allows users to structure data in a Wiki, and it’s very useful for mashups, so you can easily combine various web apps (e.g. Flickr with Google Calendar with Google Maps with Delicious with Google Base, etc.).

The software is written entirely in the Java programming language, which means that it’s a platform-independent application that supports all the GNU/Linux distributions, as well as the commercial Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
