What is Xprobe2 FOR LINUX?

Xprobe

Xprobe is a cool alternative to some tools that rely a lot on the TCP protocol for remote active operating system fingerprinting. It’s designed to make things easier and more efficient.

What is Xprobe?

Xprobe I combines different methods for remote active operating system fingerprinting using the ICMP protocol. These methods were discovered during research on "ICMP Usage in Scanning." This makes it super simple, fast, and powerful for figuring out what operating system a targeted host is using.

Xprobe2 Features

Now, let’s talk about Xprobe2. This version relies on fuzzy signature matching and probabilistic guesses. It can handle multiple matches at once, all thanks to its handy signature database. It’s an active operating system fingerprinting tool that takes a different approach compared to other tools.

Requirements for Xprobe

If you're thinking of using Xprobe, here’s what you’ll need:

  • A C++ compiler (gcc works just fine).

  • libusi++ (this comes included with the distribution).

  • libpcap (make sure you use version 0.6.x or later).

  • If libpcap isn’t in the standard path, use --with-libpcap-libraries=/path/ and --with-libcap-includes=/path options.
