Windows Tray Icons Creator is a handy little app that lets you create custom tray icons for different programs. You can manage up to ten icons without needing to install anything!

Easy to Use and Portable

You can simply save the downloaded .exe file anywhere on your disk and just double-click it to open the program. Just a heads up, you'll need to have .NET Framework installed. Another cool option is keeping it on a USB flash drive so you can run it on any computer that has .NET Framework.

How It Works

When you start the app, it creates an icon in the taskbar notifications area and stays there quietly until you need it. Just double-clicking this icon opens a small panel where you can set up settings for up to ten different tray icons at once.

Customizing Your Icons

You’ll need to assign an icon and add a tooltip that shows when you hover your mouse over it, plus define what happens when you click it. Although it's not highlighted anywhere, you can write commands for the click action just like how you'd use the system's Run tool.

Commands You Can Use

For instance, with Windows Tray Icons Creator, you can make it open tools like Registry Editor (regedit), DirectX (dxdiag), Calculator (calc), Notepad (notepad), Internet Explorer (iexplore), or Firefox (firefox). You can even set it to open a specific folder!

Keep It Running

A thing to keep in mind is that the application needs to be running in the tray for your other tray icons to show up. You can set it to start with Windows every time until you decide otherwise.

Performance and Limitations

The app worked well during our tests with minimal impact on performance. However, we did run into an error because it couldn’t find its default tray icon, which meant we had to assign custom icons ourselves. Only ICO files sized 16x16 are supported here! Plus, if you're looking for help with what goes into the "Mouse Click Action" field, good luck—there’s no manual built-in and it's tough finding info unless you hit up the developer's website.
