Description
VNC Open
VNC Open is the free version of VNC (Virtual Network Computing) remote control tech. It uses a protocol called Remote Frame Buffer (RFB) to help you manage a computer from afar. Pretty cool, right?
What Can You Do with VNC Open?
With VNC Open, developers can make their own remote desktop apps using version 3 of the RFB protocol. When you download and install VNC Open, you get both the server and viewer from the free edition. Plus, you can choose to only grab what you really need.
How Does It Work?
The server needs to be on your local computer, while the viewer goes on the remote machine. Setting up the server can be a bit tricky, but most people find that it works just fine with default settings and only a little bit of tweaking.
Password Protection & Security
You don’t have to do this, but adding a password for connections is a smart move! This way, only people who know the password can access your system. If you're feeling extra secure, you can change the connection port and even set up a whitelist for certain local machines that should connect.
Tweaking Settings for Better Performance
The server side has some neat settings to boost data transmission quality. For example, you can turn off wallpapers or background patterns to speed things up!
Viewer Options
On the viewer side, you have options too! You can pick different color levels (the default is 64 colors) for quicker event reception and use various input methods for controlling actions on the server. Just make sure these options are accepted by your server!
A Note on Usability
Even though VNC Open has some straightforward options and isn’t too complicated, it might not be as user-friendly as some other tools out there. It gets the job done but remember that there are easier alternatives if you're looking for something with less configuration hassle.
