Getting Started with Ultra-LiveCD

Hey there! So, after spending ages typing out commands by hand, I decided to whip up some scripts to make life easier. I cleaned them up a bit and thought, why not share them? If you’re using Ubuntu or any Debian-based system, these scripts will help you get things done.

Before You Begin

Before diving in, make sure to set your own variables at the top of the ultra_livecd_menu file. Leaving the defaults is totally fine if you're just starting out!

Handling the Scripts Right

A little tip: don’t move any files around after unpacking them. Keeping everything in its original spot ensures everything runs smoothly.

Create Your Own LiveCD

Creating a LiveCD with Ultra-LiveCD can use quite a bit of bandwidth, so keep that in mind! If you know how apt-get works and have basic Linux skills, this will be an easy ride for you. Plus, no GUI needed—you can run everything through the command line!

The LiveCD User Info

You might want to know that when your LiveCD boots up, it generates a user automatically. Wondering where to stash those user files? Everything in /etc/skel/ gets copied into the new user's home folder. If you're making an Intrepid Ibex base LiveCD, changing the username and host works like a charm! But if you're on Hardy Heron, it ends up as casper@live—if anyone’s got a fix for that, hit me up at chris4585 on irc.freenode.net or email me at [email protected].

Making Your Own LiveCD Steps

If you want to create your very own LiveCD, just run the ultralivecd script and follow along with the options provided.

Edit for Perfection!

If your first ISO isn't quite right—no worries! Editing is easy-peasy. Just run the ultralivecd, choose option 3 to chroot into it, then option 6 to generate the ISO again. You can keep tweaking until it's just perfect!
