Description

Turn On is a cool little GNOME app that, as its name (more or less accurately) hints at, allows users to turn on devices in a LAN network (even though it also works over the Internet).

It uses the industry standard technology of Wake-On-LAN (WOL or WoL), which uses the so-called "magic packets" that are being sent to a device in order to wake it or boot it up.

This makes this app perfect for booting up PCs remotely, as well as other types of devices, servers, gaming servers, and so forth. It's also one of those app that works great with remote control software.

The application is primarily aimed at GNOME ecosystems thanks to its GTK/Libadwaita GUI. The main window of the app is the place from where you can start-up, monitor, and manage your devices.

To add a device, users must provide a device name, the MAC address, as well as an IP address (or hostname).

At heart, Turn On is a very non-pretentious app (as one might expect from a free and open-source app that uses WoL). The GUI is very straightforward, as described above.

In short, it's not the first or last app of this sort, and it's also very similar to Awake on LAN. One of the biggest advantages of Turn On (when compared to the aforementioned Awake on LAN) is the fact that this app (to my satisfaction) integrates a bit better with GNOME.

Don't expect miracles, though. Turn On allows users to add new devices from the context menu, but more importantly, it integrates with GNOME Search (which adds a bit of much-welcomed convenience to the app).

Even though the name could be a bit better (at least in my opinion), Turn On is a great little app that works exactly as intended.
