tp-fan

tp-fan is a handy tool that helps keep your IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks cool by monitoring temperatures and controlling fan speeds. It’s an open-source project released under the GPL v3, so you know it’s built for everyone to use.

How Does tp-fan Work?

The tpfand daemon is what does the magic here. It controls the system fan through software. This means you can make your notebook quieter, but just a heads up—this might also lead to higher temperatures, which could potentially harm your computer or shorten its lifespan. But since version 0.90, you can set different fan trigger temperatures for each temperature sensor. Pretty cool, right?

User-Friendly Interface

This project also includes tpfan-admin, a GTK+ frontend that lets you monitor system temperature and tweak those fan trigger settings easily.

Getting Started with tp-fan

Configuration Made Easy!

You can start configuring tpfand by heading to System -> Administration -> Thinkpad Fan Control from GNOME or just type tpfan-admin in a shell terminal.
