The Shortcut - Windows Live Messenger is a nifty little widget designed for the Yahoo! Widget Engine. It gives you a quick way to access Windows Live Messenger (WLM), as long as it's already installed on your computer. Pretty handy, right?
Now, just a heads-up: both the Yahoo! Widget Engine and WLM have been out of service for quite some time. WLM has actually moved over to Skype, but don't worry, you can still use this widget!
Getting this tiny widget into the Yahoo! dock is super easy. It comes with a small panel featuring the WLM logo, so when you click it, it launches WLM right away.
If clicking doesn't do the trick, no worries! You can open up the configuration panel and change the default path for WLM if it's installed in a different spot than what was set up initially.
The Shortcut doesn't just find Windows Live Messenger; it can also locate any .exe files or other types of files on your computer. This means you can quickly launch your favorite documents, photos, or even web browsers by setting those file paths!
One thing to keep in mind is that there aren't many customization options available from the developer. For example, you can't change the logo image on the widget.
The good news is that because of how Yahoo! Widget Engine works with its widgets, you have some cool settings at your disposal. You can set how your window behaves—like whether it stays normal or pops above other windows. Plus, you can disable mouse interactions and adjust how see-through (or transparent) your widget appears.
