The Shortcut - Microsoft Word is a handy little widget made for the Yahoo! Widget Engine. It gives you quick access to the Microsoft Word copy on your computer, which is super convenient!
Even though the Yahoo! Widget Engine has been discontinued and you can't download widgets from their site anymore, you can still grab the platform along with this widget from Softpedia.
This tiny gadget fits right into your software setup. When you run it, a small window pops up showing the icon for Microsoft Word 2003. Just click that icon, and bam! It launches your text editor if it's installed on your machine.
If your version of Word is stored somewhere else instead of the usual spot, no worries! You can head to The Shortcut's configuration panel. There, you'll find a built-in file explorer that helps you locate and choose Word's executable file easily.
Here's something cool: this widget can recognize the .exe file of any software. Whether it's installed or portable, you can set it up to launch other tools too! You don’t even need to have Word installed for this gadget to work its magic. Just keep in mind that while it’s great, you can't change the Word icon for something else—customization options are pretty limited.
The Yahoo! framework includes some neat options for managing the window. You can make it stay on top or below other active panels, adjust how transparent it is with a simple slider, and even set it up so that it ignores mouse events and stops mouse dragging.
