The Palette is a cool program that helps you create 'theoretically correct' melodies. It’s built on some solid composition and harmony theory, which makes writing melodies way easier. You get to learn through seventeen lessons, each packed with one or two demo scripts. These lessons guide you step-by-step through the whole melody-making process.
This software shows melodies in a way that’s similar to how we speak. It breaks down the melody into words (motives), phrases, sentences, commas (caesuras), question marks, and points (cadences). This smart approach lets you use a straightforward algorithm for composing your tunes.
The Palette comes with twenty-four methods of motive development. Some of these include variation, inversion, repetition, new rhythm, and sequence—kind of like visual effects in graphic editors. With these methods at your fingertips, you can take any piece of a melody (like a motive or phrase) and tweak it into something fresh!
The program also lets you work with chords by showing them in a four-voice format: soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. There are tons of ways to arrange any chord! You can put any note first and choose whether to keep things tight or spread them out.
You have the freedom to select both the type and arrangement of chords. Plus, if you're looking to take your creations further, there's an option to export your melodies as MIDI (*.mid) files! The exported file includes three tracks: melody, chords, and bass. You can easily import this into any MIDI sequencer or style arranger to build an entire tune.
This software is truly a gem for anyone wanting to craft their own music!
