SumChecker is a handy little tool that makes it super easy to calculate, check, and compare file hashes quickly. It supports popular hashing algorithms like MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2, SHA-256, and SHA-512. If you’re looking for a way to ensure your files are secure, this software might just do the trick!
So, what’s the deal with these hashes? Well, let’s start with MD5, which stands for Message-Digest Algorithm. It’s a widely used method that creates a 128-bit hash value represented as a 32-digit hexadecimal number.
Next up is SHA-1, or Secure Hash Algorithm 1. This one was designed by the National Security Agency to improve on MD5. However, over time it proved to be less secure on its own. SHA-1 gives you a 160-bit value and shows up as a 40-digit long text format.
SHA-2, or Secure Hash Algorithm 2, helps you compare computed hashes with known ones to check data integrity. The program uses functions like SHA-256 and SHA-512 from the SHA-2 family. These provide 32-bit and 64-bit long text formats respectively.
This application has two main tabs along with a “File” menu where you can save your generated codes easily. In the “Generate” tab, you can choose any file and select your preferred hash types to get those unique values calculated instantly!
The codes pop up in the window right away so you can select and copy them if needed. You also have the option to save everything into a new document by just picking where you want it saved! Each hash type gets its own text document named accordingly.
If you're checking multiple files one at a time, don’t worry! The app updates existing documents with new hashes as you go along. Plus, beside each signature, you'll see details about the processed files.
The “Compare” tab is super useful too! You can check if your encrypted files are intact by entering a new file for SumChecker to automatically calculate its hash or by pasting in an existing checksum. It’ll tell you if they match (you’ll see an “OK” message) or not (you’ll get a “Failed” message).
In summary, SumChecker is an easy-to-use tool that helps secure and verify your files using MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2 checksums like SHA-256 and SHA-512. If you're trying this kind of software for the first time, make sure to check out some documentation before diving in!
