Substitution Cipher

Substitution Cipher is a unique tool that helps you encrypt and decrypt documents in a way that's a bit different from what you might expect. Unlike many other software options that rely on high-security encryption levels and passwords, this app uses a method called mono-alphabetic substitution. It's pretty straightforward!

Simple Design

Aesthetically, Substitution Cipher keeps things minimalist. The main window is split into two parts: one for encryption and the other for decryption. It’s not going to win any design awards, but it gets the job done.

User-Friendly Features

One thing to note is that you can't just drag and drop files right into the app. Instead, you'll need to use the built-in browse button to find your files. And here’s a big catch: Substitution Cipher only works with plain text files! So if you're looking to encrypt something like a Word document or RTF file, you might want to look elsewhere.

How It Works

You can also type your message directly into the app in dedicated dialog boxes. Before you start encrypting or decrypting, though, you'll need to create your own cypher alphabet. This means coming up with substitutes for each of the 26 letters—no spaces or special characters allowed!

Output Options

The cool part? Once you're done with your task, you can print out the plain text or even export it as a plain text file. During our tests, we found that Substitution Cipher doesn't hog system resources while it's running.

Overall, Substitution Cipher offers an easy way to encrypt or decrypt documents without too much hassle. It may not be the most powerful tool out there since it lacks advanced features like support for multiple file formats (think DOC or RTF) and drag-and-drop functionality.
