SOHO Cam is a lightweight widget that once let you enjoy a cool slideshow of images from SOHO. It was pretty neat to have those space pictures right on your desktop!
The Solar & Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO for short, is a collaboration between the European Space Agency and NASA. Its goal? To study the Sun's core and solar winds. This spacecraft uses both European and American tech to send back high-quality images all the time.
SOHO Cam used to display a slideshow of these stunning images right on your desktop! The interface was super user-friendly, letting you manually flip through pictures, check out their resolution, and see when they were taken. Plus, you could choose how big you wanted the images to be!
But here's the catch: Windows gadgets like this one are no longer around because of some serious security issues. Hackers found ways to use these widgets to invade your privacy by extracting sensitive info or even taking control of your computer.
Now that those little desktop applications are gone, SOHO Cam isn't really useful anymore. Still, it reminds us of a great idea that brought a bit of fun into our daily tech lives.
