Description

SMBNetFS FOR LINUX

Product Description:

SMBNetFS is an open-source, portable, and completely free command-line software that acts as a non-interactive daemon to create a network filesystem on various GNU/Linux or UNIX-like operating systems. This enables users to conveniently access Samba and Microsoft network shares.

Key Features:

  • Support for user-defined workgroups, hosts, and links

  • Support for national characters

  • Non-interactive daemon that operates in the background and starts at boot time

  • Multi-threaded design for simultaneous file or share access

With SMBNetFS, users gain the ability to interact with Microsoft/Samba networks present on their LAN (Local Area Network) just like any other standard UNIX filesystem. The software dynamically generates workgroup, computer, and share entries while also providing support for Microsoft Windows domains.

Since SMBNetFS is a non-interactive daemon, it does not offer a graphical interface. Installation on GNU/Linux or FreeBSD operating systems is straightforward - users need to obtain the latest source code from Softpedia, store the archive locally, extract its contents, and access a terminal emulator.

To install SMBNetFS system-wide, users can run the './configure && make' command after navigating to the extracted archive folder using the 'cd' command. Once compiled, installation can be completed by executing the 'make install' command with root privileges.

After successful installation, users can explore the software's command-line options by running 'smbnetfs --help' in a terminal emulator. This includes a range of commands such as setting character encoding, enabling or disabling the GNOME Keyring software, specifying the maximum read/write block size in Kb, defining network scanning intervals, configuring the scheduler, and determining the maximum number of retries before failure.
