What is SheepShaver FOR LINUX?

SheepShaver

SheepShaver is a cool Open Source tool that lets you run PowerPC Classic MacOS software on your computer, even if you’re using something else like Windows or Linux. It’s pretty handy if you’ve got some old Mac programs that you want to use again!

What You Need to Get Started

Before diving in, keep in mind that you'll need a copy of MacOS and a PowerMacintosh ROM image to make this work. SheepShaver is shared under the GNU General Public License (GPL), so it’s all about sharing the love!

Running Speed

If you're on a PowerPC-based system, you're in luck! The applications will run at their native speeds—no emulation needed. For other systems, SheepShaver gives you the first PowerPC G4 emulator. Just a heads up though: it doesn’t come with MMU support for running MacOS Classic.

Performance Insights

The current CPU emulator uses basic just-in-time (JIT) translation techniques, which means performance is roughly 1/8th of what you'd get natively. That sounds slow, but it still allows you to enjoy those classic apps!

Supported Platforms

You can run SheepShaver on various platforms including Linux (i386, ppc, x86_64), MacOS X for ppc, Darwin, NetBSD 2.0, FreeBSD 5.3, and Windows for x86. If you're into Windows development too, we could really use your help here!

Testing Made Easy

This site has precompiled binaries and source snapshots from development CVS to help ease testing until there’s a formal release available. If you're curious and want to try it out or need more info about downloading SheepShaver, check it out!
