Most of us have files or folders that we'd like to keep private for one reason or another, but it's not so easy to do that in macOS, as you need to use a Terminal command or third-party app to hide items. Secret Folder is a basic app that makes it easier to hide files or folders. It applies the standard macOS hidden flag from an intuitive interface, but it's not the most secure app of its kind out there.

To hide something, simply drop it in the main window, whether it's a file or folder. Then, just toggle the switch to make it invisible in Finder, and toggle again to reveal it. All processed files and folders are stored in the list between launches.

You have the option to make all items visible on launch and invisible when quitting the app, as well as revealing and opening them on double-click.

You can also use a password to prevent anyone from revealing content you have hidden. Mind you, there is a much easier way to reveal hidden content directly from Finder.

The app's main problem is that the macOS hidden flag is easy to disable. It only takes a single keyboard shortcut to reveal all hidden files, whether you've used a password in Secret Folder or not. Of course, anyone using your Mac would still have to find the hidden files and folders on your drive, but this app might actually help them in that regard, as every item's path is displayed in the main window, even while invisible.

While Secret Folder works just fine, it shouldn't be relied on for protecting sensitive files or folders. Its security is very easy to circumvent, and the full version is fairly expensive given its quite basic functionality.
