Scid is a handy software tool that helps you view, edit, and manage your chess game collections. It works on Windows, Unix/Linux, OS X, and even Android.
The first time you open Scid, the interface might look a bit busy. But don’t worry! This just means it has tons of features to help you learn and improve your chess skills.
You’ll find a built-in chessboard that shows details about the game you're playing. You can see notations, comments, and examples from the database right there!
At the top of the board are several navigation buttons. These let you jump to the start or end of a game, go back or forward one move at a time, add new variations, or even rotate the board 180 degrees. You can also choose to hide or show board coordinates.
One cool feature is the autoplay mode. This lets Scid automatically play moves for you! You can set how long to wait between moves and get info about players like their country, results, dates, sites they played at, and even their photos!
You can enter moves using either your mouse or keyboard. If you make a mistake? No problem! You can take back moves or make temporary changes with trial mode.
If you're typing in moves using SAN notation, Scid has an auto-completion feature too! Just type part of the move and it fills in the rest for you.
You can easily add annotations to your games with symbols and comments. Plus, bookmark games for later! Export them as HTML files or PGN files for easy sharing.
Scid allows you to search through its database for specific players or game patterns. Want to find all games involving certain pieces? It's all right there!
You can work with something called a ‘clipbase’ database which keeps files only in memory—perfect if you don’t want permanent storage.
This tool also helps in managing your databases by letting you delete unwanted games and fix player names easily.
If installation sounds like too much hassle for you, check out Scid Portable. It's quick to use without going through lengthy setup steps!
