Regard3D is a cool open-source visual rendering app that lets you create 3D models from a bunch of photos of the same object, taken from different angles. Pretty neat, right?
Now, before we dive in, I have to be real with you—working with Regard3D isn’t exactly a walk in the park. You really need to follow some specific steps if you want your projects to turn out like you picture them.
Here are some handy tips before you start snapping away: the more pictures you take of your object, the better! Try to shoot from slightly different angles each time. Higher resolution images mean more detail in your final model. Ideally, capture your object from every angle!
Once you've got your photos ready, it’s time to kick off a new project. Just click on the “Create new project” button. After setting up where you want to save it and naming your project, hit “Add Picture Set” to upload all those pictures.
Click OK and then hit that “compute matches” button. This is where the magic happens—the app will find key points in each image and match them up with points from other pics.
The next step? Triangulation! Make sure “Matches 0” is selected and click on the “Triangulation …” button. You’re almost there! Just two more clicks until you've got your 3D model.
Your next clicks will be on the “Create dense pointcloud…” button followed by the “Create Surface…” button. If all goes well, you'll have a stunning 3D object created from those photos!
If you're feeling unsure about any part of this process, definitely check out the detailed tutorial available on their website.
You’ll find that Regard3D works surprisingly well without hogging all your Mac's resources! The only catch is that it has a bit of a learning curve.
While it might not be super user-friendly at first glance, Regard3D packs some serious power for creating awesome 3D models from sets of images.
