How Prey Works

The cool thing about Prey is that it doesn’t have a visible app interface. You won’t find it in your Applications folder or Activity Monitor. Instead, Prey runs quietly in the background as a daemon, letting you track your device through its web interface.

Getting Started with Prey

To kick things off, all you need to do is launch the Installer, follow the prompts, and let Prey handle the tracking for you. Once you're logged into Prey's website, you can see all the devices you've tracked and tweak the settings for each one.

Tracking Your Device

If your Mac goes missing, don't worry! You can check when it last checked in and report it as missing right from your dashboard. Plus, Prey lets you choose what kind of data to capture when your Mac is lost.

Geolocation Features

You can set up Prey to try and find out where your device is using its internal GPS or by looking at nearby WiFi access points. It’ll gather detailed info like IP addresses, active connections, detected WiFi networks, and how your computer connects to the Internet.

Sneak Peek Into Active Sessions

But wait, there’s more! Prey can grab useful info about current sessions too. It can take desktop screenshots and even list all running applications. If you want to be extra sneaky, you can configure it to snap a picture of whoever’s using your Mac with its built-in webcam!

If Your Mac Gets Stolen

If the worst happens and someone steals your Mac, don’t panic! You have options to help locate it. You could make it play a loud sound so you can hear it if it's close by or change the wallpaper to display an alert message. You can also lock your Mac with a password of your choice.
