Description

KDE Plasma might not be the most hyped up, the most beautiful to look at, or the most popular desktop environment out there, but there's no doubt that it's one of the best nonetheless.

Besides the ability to tinker with it that makes it so loved by many, KDE Plasma is also renowned for having one of the most minimalist layouts out there, hence, most apps that are not made specifically for said DE might look a bit off.

This is definitely not the case with PlasmaTube, a super clean-looking YouTube video player designed specifically for Plasma KDE desktops.

Originally called Kirigami, PlasmaTube is a free and open-source YouTube video player based on libmpv, QtMultimedia (an add-on module that provides a rich set of QML types and various C++ classes for efficient multimedia handling), and youtube-dl (the best and most popular free and open-source, command-line-based download managers for YouTube and other similar websites).

The app allows you to play and watch YouTube videos and music directly on your phone or computer's desktop, and that's about it.

PlasmaTube is primarily designed to look at home on Plasma, and it doesn't exceed one's expectations in terms of features. In fact, the feature set is quite limited, as the app allows you to work with playlists, view videos, search for videos, and so forth.

One good feature is the fact that the app allows you to log in using your Google account (but it's not as straightforward as logging into YouTube using a web browser), which also provides you with access to all your videos, recommendations, and playlists.

PlasmaTube is a decent, little app that should come in handy to those who want a YouTube desktop player specifically designed for KDE Plasma. A bit of warning: even though you can install it on other distros with different DEs, you may not want to, as it looks really out of place.
