NConf is a handy web tool built with PHP that helps you configure Nagios monitoring software. What sets it apart from other tools is its cool enterprise-class features like templates, service dependencies, and the ability to set up a large-scale, distributed Nagios server system.
This tool is mainly aimed at sysadmins who already know their way around Nagios but want an easier way to manage their configuration files. It’s all about making life simpler!
Development for NConf kicked off back in 2006. The main goal was to create a graphical interface that any sysadmin could use without too much hassle. Plus, it automatically sets up a distributed Nagios server layout! Since there’s only so much one Nagios instance can monitor, our tool lets you spread services across multiple instances if needed.
NConf is built on PHP, Perl, and MySQL. To keep things flexible for future changes in Nagios software, we've designed an abstract data model. This means we can easily update the database as new options come into play in Nagios. Instead of having typical entities like “host” or “service,” we use what we call “configuration items.” Each item belongs to a class and has various attributes assigned to it—kind of like how a Nagios config file works!
The interface is done in PHP too! All views and forms are super dynamic, so if any Nagios configuration details change, no need to tweak the PHP code. Everything updates based on what’s stored in the database—this makes our GUI lightweight and efficient!
Usability has always been our top priority with NConf. You can customize the look and feel just how you like it! Features can be turned on or off depending on user privileges. There are also different modules available for authentication, password encryption, configuration deployment, and even syntax checking.
