The Namespace Explorer is a powerful tool designed to help you explore and interrogate the Windows Vista Shell objects. Developed by Bjarke Viksoe, this application allows you to delve into the inner workings of the Windows Shell, which wraps the file-system and various virtual objects like the Recycle Bin in its unique hierarchical namespace.
By using the Namespace Explorer, you can gain valuable insights into how the Windows Shell operates and understand its underlying structure. The root of this hierarchy is the Desktop object, with items below it laid out like the familiar Windows Explorer interface. The tool also supports various features like Shell Links, thumbnail view, ZIP Folders, and the Recycle Bin, which acts as a container for physical file-system folders.
Additionally, you have the option to instruct the tool to use the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface Registry branch to search for supported COM interfaces on an object. This part of the Registry, updated by Microsoft components like Internet Explorer, allows the tool to install popular interfaces for a more comprehensive scanning result. To enable this feature, simply choose the "Do Full Interface Scan" option in the Interfaces page.
While the interfaces from the Registry scan may be named, it does not necessarily mean they are documented. Nevertheless, the Namespace Explorer is a valuable tool for developers and tech enthusiasts looking to dive deeper into the Windows Vista Shell.
