Localhost is a cool software that lets you access a shared file system from around the world right through your browser. Based on Azureus, it’s pretty neat!
This file system runs in a totally decentralized way, which means all the computers using Localhost help keep it running smoothly. It uses BitTorrent tech along with something called Kademlia, which is a new type of Distributed Hashtable technology.
When you use Localhost, everyone can access the same root folder. You can make changes to any folder by adding files or new folders. Whenever you do that, it creates a new version! Each folder can have multiple versions, so users can check out any version they like. The version that most people are looking at becomes the default one displayed.
If you update a folder and create a new version, others will see your changes. If they think your updates are great, they'll stick with your version instead of others. This could make your version super popular!
You even have the option to put your name on the version description! Just remember to keep the program running on your computer until someone else views it; otherwise, if no one is looking at that version online, it'll vanish.
Every time you click into a folder or download a file, you're helping serve it up for others too! So it gets easier for everyone to find what they need.
You can think of Localhost like Wikipedia but for files! It's also kind of like having one big shared network drive that uses BitTorrent to lessen strain from central servers.
If you're feeling confused about how this works, give it a shot from your web browser without needing to install anything first. It's easy and fun!
The goal here is simple: let’s build an awesome archive where people can find useful files! This could include Open Source software or Creative Commons licensed works—just make sure whatever files you share are legal.
If you enjoy using Localhost, download it to unlock its full potential! Once downloaded, feel free to create a different root folder version that fits what you think would be useful. If it's good enough, it'll be seen by everyone else on this system as well as those checking out the web preview.
Just so you know, Localhost is actually based on Azureus. So if you want to swap out Azureus for Localhost—go right ahead!
