Description

Just by reading its name, most Linux users will be able to tell that KRenamer is a KDE app for renaming files. Even though it's a KDE app, KRename is one of the most powerful batch file renamers for Linux, full stop.

Don't let yourself be fooled by this humdrum-looking app. Yes, the GUI is not that special, and yes, the tabbed GUI is not exactly what one might call exciting.

However, take the app for a quick spin, and you're bound to discover what this app is all about. There are two main aspects that make KRename one of the best batch file renamers for Linux.

Firstly, it can rename hundreds and thousands of files in one go. Secondly, because it comes with support for various interesting plugins, it opens up a whole slew of possibilities. For instance, KRename can rename files using the metadata of images, movies, music, and more (but more on that later).

The whole premise of batch file renaming apps is to simplify the workflow. In this respect, KRename gets the job done as it can remake large numbers of files based on various expressions. The app is also capable of moving/copying the renamed files to other directories, converting filenames to both upper and lower-case, as well as adding numbers to filenames.

The app can also boast a "find and replace" function, allowing you to replace parts of filenames, as well as rename MP3 and OGG Vorbis files based on ID3 tags. The app can also rename directories recursively.

I mentioned that one of the coolest aspects of KRename is the plugin support, and I really mean it. The comes with various plugin API suggestions that allow you to extend the app's features by a great margin.

Some of these plugins are as follows: Transliteration, SeriesNumber, JavaScript Plugin, Increase Counter, Font Plugin, Date and System functions, and Date and Time Plugin.

For such an old app, I have to say that KRename is surprisingly capable.  It doesn't look the part (even though, it very well looks like a typical KDE app), but it's easy to use, extremely versatile (thanks to its plugin support), and best of all - quite capable.
