Description
OTPs (one-time passwords) are not a new concept, and considering how popular 2FA (two-factor authentication) is in today's online world, there's a very good chance you use them daily (or very often).
If you're a KDE users, and you're looking for an app capable of generating two-factor authentication tokens for logging in to your online accounts, then look no further than Keysmith.
Right off the bat, I will say that Keysmith is not the best 2FA token generation app out there. At its core, Keysmith is a very simplistic app that can only do one thing: generate 2FA tokens (both HOTP and TOTP tokens).
For those are not familiar with HOTP and TOTP, just know that there are two types of OTPs: HOTP (Hash-based Message Authentication Code) and TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password).
The first type uses an event-based OTP algorithm that provides an event counter once the user uses the code. The second type of OTP uses a time-based algorithm that executes from a specific time counter (meaning up until the provided time expires).
The application's GUI is also nothing worth writing home about. It's a simple KDE GUI that allows users to add various accounts and organize them in specific entries.
Keysmith offers a quick way to copy said codes to the clipboard (by clicking the codes), as well as a swift way to generate new codes (by clicking the arrow-like symbol), and that's basically about it.
As mentioned before, Keysmith is not exactly a complex app. I'll be honest: it could do with some more features. For instance, a QR code scanning feature (which would make it very good for KDE Plasma Mobile users), and a backup and restore function for accounts. Thankfully, these features are already added to the official project todo list on the app's repository.
