To start using the JPEG Jackal application, you must simply drag and drop the picture files you want to process on top of the app’s main window. Note that the utility can only handle the JPEG file format.

Worth mentioning is that you can also drop entire folders on the JPEG Jackal main window, and the app will start scanning them for files that can be optimized. Via the JPEG Jackal Preferences, you can also choose to have the subfolders analyzed.

The same JPEG Jackal Preferences panel allows you to adjust the compression level, going from high compression to high quality: just move the marker along the slider bar to change the configuration.

Since JPEG Jackal allows you to output the optimized file to a separate folder, you can experiment with the configuration until you get a satisfactory result. The app can prompt you for the output directory each time you launch a compression task.

On the other hand, JPEG Jackal allows you to change the default settings either to overwrite the files or to automatically save them to the selected folder.

Once the process is done, in the JPEG Jackal main window you get to see how much space has been freed up. The app expresses the information in percentages but also generates a graph to help you visualize the information.

To sum up, JPEG Jackal comes with a built-in JPEG optimization algorithm that enables you to decide if you want to increase the compression level and reduce the files' size, or you want to preserve the quality.
