iAntiSpy is a super easy way to tackle online tracking, annoying ads, and pesky malware. Instead of juggling different extensions or privacy-focused browsers that can feel like a lot of work, this app runs in the background across your entire system. It keeps an eye on all DNS lookup requests from any app or browser and blocks those that are linked to trackers, malware, or phishing sites.
The app sets up a system extension that allows it to monitor these DNS requests no matter where they come from. And guess what? All the heavy lifting happens right on your Mac! You’ll even get to see how many requests have been blocked right in the main window of the app.
iAntiSpy logs every request it blocks, showing you which domain it came from and what app made the request. If you recognize a request as safe, you can let it through. Just remember, this list will clear out when you close the app.
One thing to keep in mind is if your browser uses DNS over HTTPS (DoH), iAntiSpy won’t be able to see those DNS lookups and can’t block harmful ones either. So, in these cases, you'll need to rely on your browser and any extra extensions for dealing with trackers and ads. Safari is one of the few major browsers that doesn’t support DoH yet.
If your browser doesn't support DoH—or if it's turned off—iAntiSpy becomes really handy! It works wonders for non-browsing apps that aren’t easily protected by extensions or privacy settings.
This app does a pretty good job at blocking many ads but only stops their content from loading; it can't remove empty ad spaces like some popular ad-blocking extensions can.
If you go for the Enhanced Protection subscription, you'll get daily database updates instead of just monthly ones. While regular updates aren't as crucial as they are for antivirus software, having them more frequently is always better!
The paid version also has features like blocking phishing and scam sites plus encrypting DNS traffic. But here’s the catch: free users won’t have access to DoH since this feature needs to be turned off in browsers for iAntiSpy to see those requests.
This app does a fantastic job at being a system-wide privacy protector! Seeing which requests get blocked is quite revealing. However, the downside is needing an Enhanced Protection subscription for full access to features like DNS over HTTPS—making free options less appealing compared to browsers with DoH and tracking blockers.
