The HL7 Browser started out as a utility I created in Perl a while back to help me with HL7 data. Anyone who has worked with HL7 knows how tricky it can be to sift through all that info and pinpoint specific fields. This tool steps in and organizes the data into a clear structure: records at the top level, segments below those, and fields underneath segments. It’s like making a map for your data! Plus, with search features added later on, it's become super useful.

A New Beginning for HL7 Browser

Now, I’ll admit that my original version of the HL7 Browser was my first attempt at creating GUI code (using Perl/Tk). Let’s just say it wasn’t perfect! It had its quirks and sometimes didn’t work as expected. But people still found it valuable, so I felt bad just tossing the code aside while knowing users were facing bugs.

Why Java?

While all this was going on at work, we were diving deeper into Java development. Sure, there were some bumps along the way—Java can make simple tasks seem complicated—but I've grown to appreciate the language. So my interest in solving bigger challenges led me to develop this software from scratch.
