Many notebook manufacturers choose to do away with the HDD LED lights we have all become accustomed to, and these indicators are often not visible even when using a desktop PC that comes equipped with them.
HDD Activity Gauge/LED Tray Icon provides you with an alternative method of monitoring HDD activity, in the form of a customizable system tray icon. The program is very lightweight and relatively easy to use.
The application is sent to the system tray upon launch, and you can right-click the icon to bring up the customization menu. The drive that is currently monitored is displayed, and you can also modify the refresh interval.
When it comes to visuals, you have a choice between a performance meter and a classic LED that varies in intensity based on HDD usage. You can enable or disable the optional percentage text.
By default, the program analyzes only the first physical drive that is detected (HDD #0). While the utility can be used to monitor more than one hard drive, a separate instance needs to be run using command-line arguments.
Instructions for performing this operation are included in the available documentation, but it would have been great if it were possible to handle this function directly from the GUI.
HDD Activity Gauge/LED Tray Icon will not put a strain on your computer's resources, as it utilizes a negligible amount of CPU power and memory.
You should also be pleased to learn that the application does not need to be installed on your PC, as you can run the downloaded executable file from any location, and no traces are left behind when deleting the program.
Overall, HDD Activity Gauge/LED Tray Icon is a great tool for users who need a simple, lightweight HDD monitor that does the job without slowing down your PC. However, we hope future versions will allow users to manage multiple drives without having to use the command console.
