What is FV?

FV

FV is a handy CAD program designed to help you view and edit FITS images and tables that hold astronomical info. You can run it on Windows, Unix, and Mac OS X. It's pretty versatile!

Tools for FITS Files

This software packs two main tools for reading, writing, and editing FITS files, along with displaying images and plotting graphs. While the visuals might not wow you since it has an older design, don't worry! There's a help manual if you ever get stuck.

Edit with Ease

One cool feature of FV is its spreadsheet-like functionality. This makes it easy to edit header keywords and check pixels in images or entries in tables. You'll also find a summary window that shows the contents and size of all extensions in your FITS file.

Manage Extensions

You can easily copy, cut, or paste extensions using the clipboard. Plus, it allows you to append empty extensions like images or ASCII tables to existing files.

Display Options

When it comes to displaying images or plots, you can use either DS9 or POW as your main viewer. FV lets you generate histogram images from table columns, plot those columns out, and even choose which ones to display. The selected columns show up in a scrolling spreadsheet so you can edit values or add/delete rows and columns easily!

Edit Headers Like a Pro

If you're working with FITS headers, you'll love how FV displays them in a scrolling text window where you can edit, add or delete keywords. You can even create an ASCII text listing of the header along with checksum keywords!

Advanced Analysis Functions

FV doesn't stop there! It allows for line plots of one or more columns from a table using the POW widget. You also get access to a spreadsheet calculator for new column definitions and tools to check out min, max, and mean values for any selected column.
