FreeRADIUS

FreeRADIUS is a really cool open-source command-line tool that gives you a full-featured Remote Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) server. You can run it on various platforms like Linux, BSD, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X.

What’s Inside FreeRADIUS?

This project includes the actual RADIUS server, a handy client library, a module for Apache web servers, and even a PAM (Pluggable Authentication Module) library. You can grab it as a source archive to set it up on any Linux distribution you fancy.

Super Fast and Flexible

One of the best things about FreeRADIUS is its speed and flexibility. It supports more authentication protocols than most commercial or free options out there! You can use it with databases like LDAP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle.

Authentication Methods Galore!

The app supports loads of authentication methods including PAP, MS-CHAP, MS-CHAPv2, CHAP, and SIP Digest. Plus, it handles EAP too—think EAP-SIM, EAP-MD5, EAP-TTLS, EAP-TLS, EAP-PEAP—and even Cisco LEAP sub-types!

Modular Design for Advanced Users

If you're tech-savvy, you’ll love its modular design. This makes it easy to deploy on embedded systems. You can proxy all requests and manage standard RADIUS realms with simple setups. It works great with tons of 802.1x supplicants and clients!

VLANs & DHCP Features

An interesting feature is how you can assign VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) using the VMPS (VLAN Management Policy Server) protocol. Plus, there's built-in DHCP support for assigning IP addresses easily.

Standards Compliance

By default, FreeRADIUS supports all RADIUS RFC's and attribute definitions. It's compliant with many specifications including RFC1157, RFC2868, RFC1448, RFC3748, RFC5080, RFC2865, RFC2289, RFC4372, RFC2882, RFC2866, RFC4675, RFC4679, and RFC2621.

A Reliable Choice!

If you’re looking for one of the fastest and most scalable RADIUS servers for Linux-based systems—look no further! FreeRADIUS is stable and reliable; it runs smoothly on Cygwin, Mac OS X, DragonFlyBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and Windows platforms.
