Description
Fink
Fink is a cool project that tries to bring all that awesome Unix Open Source software right to Darwin and Mac OS X. It automatically downloads, builds, and installs packages into a tree that's managed by dpkg, which means it keeps track of everything you need!
Easy Package Management
You get to choose whether you want to download ready-made binary packages or build everything from scratch. It's super flexible! If you're into tech stuff and like control, building from source might be your thing.
A Community Effort
The Fink project is actually a group of volunteers who are dedicated to making Linux programs work on OSX. They really care about providing more options for Mac users who want the benefits of open-source software.
User-Friendly Interface
The main tool, Fink, works through a command-line interface. But don’t worry if you’re not a terminal wizard! There’s also the Fink Commander application, which gives you a nice Cocoa frontend. This makes picking and installing programs way easier and even fun!
Switching to Binary Distribution
NOTE: If you've already got Fink set up on Leopard from source but want to switch over to the binary distribution, here’s how: First off, run fink selfupdate
to grab the latest version of the package manager. Then run fink configure
, making sure to change your choice about using the binary distribution from No to Yes. Finally, run fink scanpackages
, and you’ll activate that shiny new binary distribution!
If you're interested in checking it out further or downloading it, head over to this link: Download Fink here!
