Debian Package Tools FE

Debian Package Tools FE is a neat application that helps you work with Debian packages. It's the first part of a toolset based on python-qt3. Basically, it’s like a user-friendly interface for building packages without needing to know all those complicated command-line tools.

What Does It Do?

This tool acts as a frontend for some key commands like dh-make, dpkg-dev, and debhelper. So, if you’re looking to learn how to build packages for Debian systems, this is a great starting point! Just keep in mind that while it makes things easier, it can’t fix build dependencies or repair non-standard sources since it's just a graphical frontend.

A Note on Compatibility

This debug release is mainly for testing on your own system. It's designed specifically for Debian-based systems, so trying to run it on something else might not go so well. For example, it won't work on SUSE because the required Qscintilla package isn’t complete there.

Ubuntu Users

If you're using Ubuntu, it's worth noting that this tool hasn’t been tested on that platform yet. Theoretically, it could run from Breezy onward, but you might hit some bumps due to package dependencies. If that’s the case, I’ll try to include an Ubuntu version soon—so just give it a shot!

Error Testing Tips

If you do run into any issues with this debug release, you can test things by using this command in the console:

dpkg-tools-fe full_path_to_the_tarball/tarball_name.tar.gz or tar.bz2,

or without argument:

dpkg-tools-fe.
