Cedar Backup is a free, open-source software that’s perfect for managing system backups on GNU/Linux or UNIX-like systems. If you’re someone who prefers using a command line, this tool can be used right from an X11 terminal emulator or even straight from the console.
This handy program is built to handle backups for several remote or local computers at once. You can save your backups to CD or DVD media and it supports various backup sources like filesystems, revision control repositories, and databases.
One cool feature of Cedar Backup is its ability to schedule regular backups every week on a specific day. Just remember, if you’re using CD or DVD media, you’ll need to swap them out weekly; otherwise, your old data might get overwritten!
Besides backing up your usual Linux/BSD machine data—like your Home folder—Cedar Backup can also take care of Subversion repositories and MySQL/PostgreSQL databases. And if you want to back up other types of data? No problem! It can be customized for that too.
If you have an Amazon S3 account, Cedar Backup lets you back up your data in the cloud instead of just relying on physical media. It comes with a well-organized set of backup features so you won’t be lost while trying to keep everything safe.
The entire software is written in Python and works entirely in the background without needing a graphical user interface (GUI). It’s designed to run smoothly on both Linux and BSD operating systems, whether you're using 32-bit or 64-bit hardware.
