cdrtools

cdrtools (which used to be called cdrecord) is a free and open-source command-line toolset that helps you create your own burned discs like CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, and even Blu-Ray discs. How cool is that?

What Can You Do with cdrtools?

With cdrtools, you get a bunch of handy utilities. First up is the cdrecord tool for burning CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs. Then there's readcd, which lets you read from those discs and has some neat CD-clone features. If you want to extract tracks from audio CDs, just use cdda2wav. It even has paranoia support to make sure everything goes smoothly! And if you're looking to create hybrid filesystems, the mkisofs script has got your back.

A Closer Look at the Tools

The project also includes some other useful tools: isodebug, which prints out debug info for mkisofs; isodump, for dumping ISO-9660 media; and isoinfo, perfect for analyzing Joliet or Rock Ridge filesystems. There's also isovfy, which checks the structures of ISO-9660 filesystems, and rscsi, that helps set up a remote SCSI daemon.

Cdrtools works with many types of CD recorders from different brands. It supports IDE/ATAPI drives, parallel port connections, and SCSI drives too! You can burn audio CDs, data CDs, or mixed CDs without any hassle. Plus, it fully supports multi-session recordings and rewritable CDRWs.

The Download Process

You can grab cdrtools here!. It's available as tarballs (that's just a fancy name for tar archives), which include the source code you'll need to compile before installation. This software works on several operating systems like GNU/Linux, BSDs, Solaris, Mac OS X as well as Microsoft Windows. Whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit hardware architecture shouldn't be a problem either!
