Back in macOS 10.12.2, Apple removed the remaining battery time indicator from the menu bar, leaving you with only the percentage indicator, just like on iOS. The number was often wildly inaccurate, as it was calculated based on the current usage rate, which can quickly change when you start a more demanding process.

While it could be wrong, many users got used to it and found it more helpful than a simple percentage. Battery Indicator is a very simple and lightweight app that brings it back, along with some interesting customization options that can make it more appealing than the default indicator.

By default, the app will show you how much longer you can run your laptop on the current battery charge, and you can click the menu bar icon for additional details. Here, you can see both the percentage charge and the estimated time at which the battery will run out.

You can choose to display the percentage charge instead of the estimated time, and just show the time on hover. What’s more, the indicator can be hidden when connected to a power plug, and the app can notify you when the laptop is fully charged or the battery has dropped to a certain level.
