Automatic Firewall is a handy script that sets up a firewall for you without any hassle. If you're using broadband or dial-up and haven’t got a firewall script yet, it’s time to grab one to keep your system safe. AutoFW makes this super easy!



Why You Need a Firewall Script


When you connect to the internet, having a firewall script is crucial. It helps protect you from various attacks while you’re browsing online. Most existing scripts are designed for many different needs and can be confusing since they often require some tweaking to work just right for each user. But don’t worry; lots of folks aren't sure what settings to change in those scripts.



Simplifying Firewall Setup


This is where AutoFW shines! It aims to give you a straightforward firewall script that you can just run and forget about. All you have to do is make sure it runs at startup or just before you connect to the internet, and it’ll automatically detect your network conditions and set up the right firewall rules for you.



What Can AutoFW Do?


Now, AutoFW has its limits; it currently works best with standard broadband connections but also covers dial-up users and standalone servers. It’s designed specifically for Linux IPTables firewalls and needs the iptables utility, which is usually found on any basic GNU/Linux install.



Essential Tools Needed


You’ll also need the ifconfig utility, along with the ip program from the iproute2 package (also known as iproute). This package is typically available on standard GNU/Linux setups but might not be installed on yours.



How Does It Detect Settings?


The script automatically detects two main things: network interfaces and open listening ports. For interfaces, it checks all active ones on your machine and sorts them into internal or external based on their IPv4 addresses:



  • 127.0.0.0/8

  • 10.0.0.0/8

  • 172.16.0.0/12

  • 192.168.0.0/16


If an IP falls into these ranges, it's considered internal; otherwise, it’s external.



Kicking Off Configuration


The listening ports are checked against known ports with their respective program names that bind to those ports, which will be opened later during setup.



A Simple Solution


The configuration process is pretty simple right now—it doesn’t have all the extra features that other scripts might offer—but hey, it gets the job done for basic needs while providing solid protection.
