Apple Firmware Restoration CD

Apple Firmware Restoration CD is a tool you need if your Mac's firmware update goes wrong. Before downloading, remember that your rights to use this update come with a software license agreement. By downloading or using it, you're saying yes to those terms!

When to Use the Firmware Restoration CD

You can only use this CD if your computer has had an interrupted or failed firmware update. If that's the case, you'll need to grab another Mac to download the software and create the CD. Alternatively, you can visit an Apple Store or an authorized service provider for help with restoring your firmware.

Create Your Firmware Restoration CD

This CD can be made on either PowerPC or Intel-based Macs but will only work on Intel-based Macs. Just keep in mind that restoring your firmware will reset some settings back to their defaults.

Steps to Create the Firmware Restoration CD:

1. Open Disk Utility (you'll find it in /Applications/Utilities).


2. Click on the Burn icon or select “Burn…” from the Images menu.


3. Find where FirmwareRestorationCD.dmg is saved and hit the Burn button.


4. Insert a blank recordable CD or DVD.


5. Click Burn again to start creating your Firmware Restoration CD.

Your files are now being burned onto the disc!

Using Your Firmware Restoration CD

If you need to restore your firmware back to factory conditions, follow these steps:

6. Make sure your computer is plugged into an AC outlet.


7. Turn on your computer while holding down the power button until you see rapid LED blinks followed by three quick blinks and three slow ones — then let go of the button.


8. Pop that Firmware Restoration CD into your optical drive.

A startup beep will sound after about 30-60 seconds, and a progress bar will show up under the Apple logo on a gray screen. This means your firmware is updating!

Caution During Update

Please DO NOT unplug, shut down, or restart during this process! If you do, you'll have to start all over from step six.

The Final Steps:

9. Your computer will restart automatically once everything's updated!
