Description

As its name clearly states, Advanced Weather Companion is, you've guessed it, a weather app. It is, in fact, a GNOME Shell extension that displays the current weather conditions (as well as hourly and daily forecasts) in the top bar.

It's also free and open-source, but that's "neither here nor there," as most tools of this type are.

The whole point of Advanced Weather Companion is to provide GNOME users with detailed weather information. It's not the first extension of its kind, but the way it goes about showing that information is a bit, well, strange.

Instead of relying on the "classic approach," the extension displays a menu with a couple of sub-menus: Current Conditions, Hourly Forecast, and Daily Forecast.

This fact alone is bound to make it lose some of that "general appeal" that most GNOME Shell extensions have in the sense that they're unobtrusive and display information without much interaction on the user's part.

Upon spending a bit of time trying out Advanced Weather Companion, I've discovered that this is an incomplete app. This is a bit of shame since, clearly, the app has potential.

Looks and basic functionality aside, there's the problem of accurate location detection. No matter what I did, I couldn't input my exact location. On the extension's GitHub page, it states that the supported weather APIs are as follows: OpenWeatherMap, WeatherAPI, and AccuWeather app.

However, I wasn't able to find any way to enter said APIs, which is exactly why this app feels incomplete. As mentioned before, this extension has potential, but it's barely usable in its current state. If you want to give this tool a try (or maybe contribute to the project), you can install it from it's official EGO page or, even easier, directly from Extension Manager app.
