« Quark - Online Manual »
Quark is a powerful security tool which will help you protect your computer from unauthorized access by taking over your system and denying any user interaction until the correct password has been provided. You can activate Quark in one of two ways:
  • Using QLoad.exe - This simple application will help you initialize Quark in just a few seconds. All you have to do is enter a password(same) in the password fields and then click "Quark". QLoad is using two password fields to ensure that you don't enter the password incorrectly;
  • Using the Command Line - In case you intend to call Quark from the command line all you have to do is to send a password as an argument. We estimate that some people will want to initiate Quark as soon as the operating system is fully loaded. You do this by placing a shortcut in the "StartUp" folder and then edit the shortcut to send a password as an argument. Using the shortcut isn't really safe because others might take a "peek" at it. We recommend that you use other methods like making some shell script(s) or custom application(s). Please note that if you launch Quark directly a null/empty password will be sent.
Once Quark has been activated a cool Matrix like interface will appear covering your entire desktop and a tiny window will be shown in which you'll notice three fields:
  • Q~Time - This field is used to display the time when Quark has been activated. You might want to note this time stamp down in case you intend to leave the room or ???. There might be the possibility that "one of your friends" knows the password thus allowing him to deactivate Quark but he can't cheat the time stamp. If the unauthorized user tries to launch Quark again a new time stamp will be noted and you'll be able to know that your computer was accessed. Please note that there is the possibility that some wise guy that knows your password might temper with the system clock and launch Quark again and you won't be able to tell that he was there. Be careful!
  • Local~Time - This is a clock that will show you the current date and time;
  • Password - This is a simple text field which simulates a password like field. Whenever you type something from the keyboard Quark builds a password that will be used to deactivate the application. This field shows you how many characters have been typed but it won't show you which characters to ensure password safety. You edit the password just like you do with/in any text field, imagine this interface as a game like GUI. When you think you've entered the correct password press ENTER.

Final notes

  • Logs - Although we've tried to prevent and deny all possible user access there might be some minor security holes therefore whenever Quark is activated it builds a log file(look inside Quark's 'Log' folder) in which it notes all relevant system interactions, that is, it monitors the system's usage;
  • GUI Design - We know you might want to change the way Quark looks therefore we provided the bitmap sources inside Quark's SDK folder. You'll notice some PNG files in Macromedia Fireworks MX format which were used to generate the bitmap files found in Quark's Skin folder. Use this PNGs as a starting point in/when editing the pictures then export them in BMP format in the Skin folder. Please note that this PNGs are useful only if you have Macromedia Fireworks MX. If you don't have Fireworks MX you might want to get it because it's one of the most powerful graphical tools on the market. To make sure you edit the pictures correctly we have provided the fonts that were used in the PNG drawings because Fireworks will need them. If you don't have this fonts installed go to your Fonts folder and install them. The generated bitmap(*.BMP) files are used by Quark to generate the interface and you are allowed only to change the way they look but not their sizes. If you change a bitmap's size Quark "might" crash in a very unpredictable way. Make sure that you always make a backup before editing anything. If you make a cool interface please send/e-mail it to us and if it's really cool we'll use it and your name will appear in this help specifying that you helped us improve Quark.
