Everybody knows that Windows is an operating system prone to make errors, hangs and crashes when you least expect this to happen. Fortunately, there are third-party applications designed to find various solutions to improve this matter, and one of them is Xtra Windows Stability.

For full disclosure, Xtra Windows Stability is a very old software project that's no longer in development. Although it can be still downloaded from Softpedia and used with all features unlocked, thanks to the fact that it's freeware, the program is not optimized for newer Windows versions, so there's a slim chance that you can actually get good results when running it on Windows 10, for example. However, it works fine on weaker hardware configurations with older OSes.

There is no installation involved, so you can unzip the downloaded archive and double-click the .exe to launch the application right away. As such, you can keep Xtra Windows Stability stored in your collection of portable software and fire it up whenever you need to make a few tweaks to the system stability.

The graphical interface of the tool is represented by a user-friendly wizard that has only two steps. The introductory stage informs you of Xtra Windows Stability's goal and mode of operation. In order to boost Windows stability, it launches separate processes for each subsystem, namely the desktop, folders and Internet Explorer. It's not uncommon that the entire process will temporarily affect system performance.

In the next wizard step, it's possible to pick the tasks to be tackled by the program since not all of them are taken into account by default. You can make any selection when it comes to enhancing stability for the desktop, Windows Explorer and Windows Explorer, as well as instruct the computer to disable automatic restarts on errors.

If autorestart is disabled, the operating system shows the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) instead. Once the modifications have been applied, Xtra Windows Stability recommends that you reboot the system in order to commit the changes.
