Description

XLIFFy

XLIFFy is a minimalist file editor made for the XML Localisation Interchange File Format (XLIFF). This format is usually used for translation files. It's pretty fast when it comes to making changes to the source file, but there's a catch—it doesn't keep the original formatting intact.

How to Get Started with XLIFFy

To kick things off with XLIFFy, you just need to open your source XLIFF files directly. The app will automatically find all the included files, and you'll be able to see their contents right away.

Understanding the Layout

XLIFFy organizes everything into three rows: the original text, your translation, and some notes. In the main window of XLIFFy, you can only edit the translation field. Even if other fields look clickable, you won't be able to type in them.

Search Tool for Easy Navigation

If you're dealing with large documents, don't worry! XLIFFy comes with a handy search tool that works in real-time. This means it only shows you entries that match what you're looking for, making things way easier.

Editing and Saving Changes

Now here's an important point: even though XLIFFy shows that your document has been edited in the status bar, it saves changes right away without waiting for you to hit save. This means modifications go straight into your source files!

A Few Limitations

One downside is that XLIFFy doesn't keep the original formatting of your file; everything gets squished into one line. This can make reading or processing your document a bit tricky.

No Language Setting Options

You also can't change or set up the target translation language within XLIFFy itself. So make sure to add the correct tag in your XLIFF file before starting!

The Bottom Line on Using XLIFFy

In short, XLIFFy can really help localize apps with its clean and simple user interface—no coding required! Just remember to back up your original file first because changes happen immediately once you start editing.

A Word of Caution

Keep in mind that not all fields in XLIFFy are editable. Plus, it doesn't keep spacing from the original file either, which could make those code files hard to read if they need more work later on.
