X10MMS is a handy software suite that supports the X10 CM19A USB home automation transceiver on Linux. With X10MMS, you can easily control your device. It lets you send and receive basic on/off commands. Plus, there's a cool sample app that lets you control XMMS remotely using the CM19A transceiver along with an X10 palmpad remote.
There are two main versions of this software suite. The older one was built using libusb, and honestly, it's a bit tricky to use. The newer version is way better since it's made as an actual kernel module. This means it’s much more reliable! But keep in mind, it does need an up-to-date 2.6.x kernel to work.
The x10mms feature is available in both versions. It opens up an instance of XMMS so you can control your music using a CR12A or CR14A remote control. There might be other remotes that work too; I just haven’t had the chance to try them all out! What’s great is that you can customize everything through a simple text file, allowing you to assign any supported function to any toggle key on your remote.
The code behind both driver versions comes from some helpful sample code provided by Neil Cherry over at the LinuxHA project. He’s doing awesome work over there!
