WinDiskWriter is a cool open-source app that helps you create bootable Windows USBs right from your Mac. It’s lightweight and works with lots of OS versions, plus it lets you skip some of the annoying Windows 11 setup requirements like TPM, Secure Boot, and the minimum RAM needed.
If you've never made a bootable Windows USB before, don't worry! The process is pretty simple. Just make sure you've got the installation ISO file ready. Then, all you have to do is tell the app where the ISO is, pick your USB drive, and hit start!
Now, keep in mind that the FAT32 file system has a limit for file sizes at 4GB. But no worries! WinDiskWriter will automatically split the install.wim file so it can fit. There are plans to support splitting .esd system images too.
You might know that when Windows 11 came out, it left some older systems in the dust due to its strict requirements. With this app, you can bypass those pesky checks for TPM, RAM, and Secure Boot. This means you can install Windows on computers that normally wouldn’t be able to handle it.
An exciting feature that's on its way is removing the need for an online account during installation. This will make setting up a local account much easier—stay tuned!
If you're working with older firmware that can't boot using EFI, don’t worry! You can install a Legacy BIOS boot sector with this app so even those old machines can use your USB drive. Plus, it adds EFI support for Windows 7 and Vista too.
WinDiskWriter is definitely one of the best tools out there for creating bootable drives. If you're on a Mac and need to make a usable Windows USB without having to jump through hoops or use a PC first, this app makes everything easy-peasy! It doesn’t have all the features of something like Rufus, but it's still packed with great capabilities—and there are even more features in development!
