Description

If you're currently looking for a project management/task manager/to-do app then, well there's nothing else to say except - "Good luck, you're going to need it."

Why do I say that? It's because there are tons of excellent options out there. Which brings me to Vikunja, one of the best free, open-source, self-hostable to-do apps out there.

I'll just get this out of the way: Vikunja is a very high-quality app that boasts and offers a ton of neat features including awesome to-do/task organization and filtering options, impressive import prospects, sharing options, and even collaboration features.

The most interesting aspect of Vikunja is probably, funnily enough, not the fact that it offers a ton of useful features. Depending on your needs and patience, Vikunja can be both a totally free product and a paid one.

If you want to host Vikunja yourself, you can use the app totally free, no strings attached. If, however, you don't want to deal with all the setup required to make Vikunja self-hosted (which involves server maintenance and backups, as well as a bit of reading and some light API/containerization work), then you can opt for a monthly subscription.

In short, if you don't have or want a server of your own, just opt for one of the three Pricing plans: Personal, Organization, and Enterprise.

All subscriptions offer a 14-day trial, which should be enough time to figure out if this approach is indeed perfect for you and your needs or not.

As far as the whole installation/configuration process is concerned, there's no getting around the fact that Vikunja is not your typical, just-click-twice-and-you're-ready type of application. It's recommended that you take a look at the Docs section before starting out with Vikunja.

Being a task manager/to-do app at heart, there's no surprise that the way task are handled and viewed in Vikunja is quite important. The app provides a lot of flexibility on both fronts.

For instance, the app can remind you of tasks before/when they're due. You can also set up recurring tasks (on both a weekly and monthly basis), as well as add due dates and labels.

In terms of task viewing, you can view tasks in List form, Gantt Chart, Kanban, as well as table form. Tasks can also be important from some of the most popular services of this sort such as Trello, Microsoft To-Do, and Todoist.

Other features include the ability to save filters (save once, use it always),  prioritize tasks, share links, and add attachments.

I already mentioned the fact that Vikunja looks and feels like a very high-quality application. It's definitely not the best for absolute beginners, but thanks to its very detailed Docs section, everyone can have a go at it with a bit of patience.

The thing that makes Vikunja better than most other apps of this sort is the fact that it doesn't feel as bloated with useless features. The GUI and the feature set are clean and simple, but thanks to its organization, sharing, and collaboration features, it can work in even enterprise-level environments.
