Description

If you know your way around tools like FFmpeg, video conversion is easy, and completely free. But if terminal commands aren’t your cup of tea, there are lots of intuitive GUIs that offer much of FFmpeg’s functionality.

One of them is the simply named Video Converter. It’s designed for users who want quick conversions with no added complications. In can both re-encode and remux clips, depending on the source and output format, but you don’t really have to know which is which to take advantage of it.

As I’ve mentioned, Video Converter is built on top of FFmpeg, but regular users won’t have any idea. To process videos, all you have to do is drop them in the main window and select your desired output format.

If you know what you’re doing, you can bring up some additional settings, allowing you to select the codec and quality. However, this can lead to longer processing times if the video needs to be re-encoded.

Nowadays, it’s not usually necessary to re-encode a video when converting. Popular codecs are supported by multiple file formats, also called containers, and the format can often be changed without altering the video and audio streams in any way.

This app also attempts this approach when converting, as long as you leave the codec setting to auto. Otherwise, it will have to encode the videos using a different codec, which will take some time.

Despite appearances, Video Converter isn’t just for newbies. Even if you’re a pro and need to quickly change a video’s format, this app is probably the fastest way to do it. Given that re-encoding is often not necessary, the lack of configuration options is not always an issue.

Of course, novices will like it even more, as it spares them from having to follow an FFmpeg tutorial or get a paid app that will do pretty much the same thing.
