Viable is a handy tool that lets you run a virtual version of macOS on your Mac without a ton of hassle. Whether you're into security testing or just want to try out an app in a safe space, virtual machines (VMs) can be super useful. Even if you’re not a tech wizard, this software makes it easy for regular users to get started.
This app takes care of downloading and installing the operating system all by itself! If you're new to this and don’t have an IPSW restore image ready, no worries! Viable can snag the latest stable one for you. Just keep in mind that these files are pretty big, so be prepared for a bit of waiting.
Once everything’s installed, just click Start VM, and find where your VM bundle is located. A window pops up with the virtual system, letting you set up macOS like you normally would during installation. However, you'll need to load this file each time you start the VM since there are no shortcuts available. If you're looking for something faster, consider using Vimy as a quick launcher.
The great thing about using Viable is how simple it is! You can easily set up shared folders to move files between your VM and your host Mac. Plus, if you want the VM to capture keyboard input while it's active, there's a keyboard pass-through option that makes things even easier.
Your virtual disk should be at least 20 GB; though if you're planning on updating macOS within the VM, 40 GB is recommended. You can customize how many cores and how much RAM Viable uses. It also lets you adjust resolution settings and supports HiDPI for those fancy Retina displays!
If privacy is key for your work, check out ViableS—the sandboxed version of the app. It doesn’t allow clipboard or folder sharing and can run without network access, making it perfect for sensitive tasks.
This app is still in Beta, so there’s room for improvement—but it’s already doing wonders for anyone wanting to quickly set up a VM on their Apple Silicon Mac! With just a little more tweaking and some added features down the line, I think it could be even better.
The best part? You don’t need any prior experience with VMs to jump in here! Viable comes with thorough documentation that answers almost any question you might have along the way. I’ve started using it myself for app testing and so far? It's been awesome!
