Ukelele is a handy little app for macOS that helps you create and customize keyboard layouts. If you need to type in different languages, this software makes it super easy! With Ukelele, you can change what each key does by using drag and drop, which is way more fun than it sounds!

Why You Need Custom Keyboard Layouts

Creating customized keyboard layouts is really important when you want to enter data in various languages. The characters are encoded with the Unicode standard, but what’s cool is that you can assign different symbols to any key on your keyboard. This means typing becomes much easier and more efficient!

User-Friendly Interface

The main window of Ukelele shows a virtual keyboard where you can see exactly what you're working with. You can assign outputs for each key right there! Plus, there's a toolbar at the top with buttons for tools you might need often, like inspector, toolbox, create/enter/leave options, modifiers, and comments.

Getting Started with Ukelele

Before diving in, make sure that the macOS Input Menu is visible in your status bar. To do this, go to System Preferences and then the Keyboard panel. In the Keyboard tab, check the box that says “Show Keyboard & Characters Viewers in the menu bar.” This step is crucial for making those drag-and-drop assignments.

Assigning Characters Made Easy

Once you've got everything set up, open up Ukelele again and use the Character Viewer from your status bar Input Menu. Now you can assign any character to whatever key you like! You can even mix basic keys with modifier keys for some cool combinations.

Create Dead Keys Too!

An interesting feature of Ukelele is its ability to generate dead keys. These don’t do anything on their own but change how your OS treats the next key pressed. It's a neat trick if you're looking to spice up your typing experience!

Edit Existing Layouts or Start from Scratch
