Description

Twilight Hack

Twilight Hack is a cool tool that lets you run Linux on your Nintendo Wii. If you're into homebrew games and apps, this is the safest way to get started on the Wii. It's pretty neat!

How Does It Work?

The Twilight Hack uses a unique trick involving a long character name for the horse in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, called 'Epona'. When you chat with a guy at the beginning of your game, it triggers something called a stack smash. This happens right when you're starting your save game, which helps load Epona's name into his dialog. Talk about clever!

What Do You Need?

If you want to try out the Twilight Hack, here’s what you'll need:

  • 1x Wii console

  • 2x SD cards (make sure one is empty)

  • 1x Non-Japanese copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which you've played at least once

  • 1x SD Gecko for GameCube or another device that can use SD cards as GameCube memory cards

  • 1x Computer running Windows, Mac, Linux, or any Unix-based OS

  • A way to read SD cards on your computer

  • (For all homebrew stuff) At least 1 GameCube controller

Troubleshooting Tips

If you're using a USBGecko, make sure to unplug it from the Wii before running this hack. There's a bug that can cause issues if it's plugged in but not connected to your computer.

If your SD card isn’t being recognized, try taking apart the adapter slightly and inserting it while holding it together. This has worked for some users.

Check Your Game Version

This hack doesn’t work with every version of Zelda: TP. To see if yours works, check the text string on the inner circle of the data surface against these:

  • RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN - working

  • RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN - working

  • RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA - working

  • RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA - working (if there are issues with alpha2, just re-download rzde2.bin)

  • RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN - not supported yet

Possible Issues You Might See

You might notice some small problems like green lines at the top of your screen when certain characters appear. Also, if your TV is set to 480i/p mode (60Hz or EDTV), parts of your screen might get cut off.
