tp-fan is a handy tool that helps keep your IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks cool by monitoring temperatures and controlling fan speeds. It’s an open-source project released under the GPL v3, so you know it’s built for everyone to use.
The tpfand daemon is what does the magic here. It controls the system fan through software. This means you can make your notebook quieter, but just a heads up—this might also lead to higher temperatures, which could potentially harm your computer or shorten its lifespan. But since version 0.90, you can set different fan trigger temperatures for each temperature sensor. Pretty cool, right?
This project also includes tpfan-admin, a GTK+ frontend that lets you monitor system temperature and tweak those fan trigger settings easily.
Warning: This program could potentially damage your notebook. The creator of this tool doesn’t take responsibility for any damages caused by using it.
If you're ready to give it a go, you can either download and install the source files manually or grab the prebuilt packages. You'll find a README file in the source distribution that walks you through manual installation steps.
You can start configuring tpfand by heading to System -> Administration -> Thinkpad Fan Control from GNOME or just type tpfan-admin
in a shell terminal.
